Hello! I am 1st today (@1sttoday), and I am a knitter based in Korea.
I personally enjoy knitting socks, so I usually design socks.
How do you work with wool?
I enjoy arranging and matching colorful wools when I knit. I used to not like putting several sets of wools together, but ever since I learned about Glencoul, I began to work on arranging colours more often. No matter how I combine colours, I get a wonderful outcome, so I’ve gained confidence in that area.
If you could choose one pivotal moment in your career, what would it be?
Creating my first knitting design, that was my pivotal moment. I was astonished by the fact that I could create!
Are there any experiences in your childhood or adolescence that have positively impacted what you do now?
My mom knitted when I was young. I thought it was cool to see the clothes and props she created out of yarns. I actually started knitting when I saw some pretty knitted things 5 years ago, but I’m sure my mom had a huge influence on me.
What are the professional achievements you are most proud of?
I enjoyed seeing patterns turn out in a different way depending on the size and colour combination. I sometimes had to unknit, but it was still fun to knit again. Also, I used to focus on making socks in my size, but I knitted for my family once, and it was a proud and happy moment for me.
If there is one thing you wish you’d know when you were starting out in wool, what would it be?
I used to work with 100% wool for winter socks, but they seemed too heavy for warm weather. I wanted to try knitting light weight socks, and I learned about Glencoul that contains combination of cotton and wool so I start to knit socks with Glencoul. I enjoy not only the texture of the yarn but also had so much fun matching colours together.
Why do you think wool and handmade textiles are so fashionable right now?
I see many handcrafts on social media, and I realized that many people no longer consider handcrafts, including knitted things, old. Since we have more access to materials, artists are able to express their work better. Also, I’m glad that many media platforms like internet videos are allowing more people to enjoy artistic and unique work.
What is your dream project?
Dream project sounds big, but my dream is pretty simple. I want to keep on designing new socks and let people know the sheer joy of knitting socks.
Who are the artists who have most greatly inspired you?
I get inspired by creative designers in Korea and their work amazes and motivates me.
What is your favourite woolen item in your wardrobe or home?
I like all kinds of knitted garments, such as cardigans and sweaters but my favorite one is socks. Socks are definitely necessary in winter to warm up my freezing feet, and their colorful and pretty designs provide me with positive energy.
Where do you work?
I like working by myself at home.
What is your ideal of a good beginner’s task?
To make socks, you need to know various knitting skills in order to learn different types of technique while knitting socks. Also, the size of socks is not too big so it does not take long time to knit. You also get to practice twice as you need to knit the other side after finished one side. (Actually knitting the same thing twice is the hardest thing as it needs to be consistent! lol)
Which is the KPC Yarn hue that really speaks to you?
All the colours are pretty, so it’s hard to choose, but my favorite one is “Mango”. That colour gives me energy and happiness, it works nicely with my sock designs and blends in nicely with other colors also! By the way, my favorite colour combination is Mango and Gum.
